Groupe d’Aide aux Enfants Tyrosinémiques du Québec (GAETQ)
Tyrosinemia is a liver disease characterized by the absence of an enzyme, called FAAH (fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase), that is normally produced by the liver. This enzyme is responsible for the the metabolic transformation of tyrosine, an amino acid that is present in most animal and vegetal proteins. The disease causes an accumulation of a waste substance that damages the liver and the kidneys, thus leading to a slow degeneration of these organs.
The Quebec Tyrosinemic Children’s Aid Group (GAETQ) was founded by parents who wanted to give themselves the means to deal with their child’s illness. Motivated by the desire to see Tyrosinemia children grow healthier, GQETQ helps parents and children obtain information on the treatment of hereditary tyrosinaemia, restricted diet, and meal preparation. It also provides psychological support for parents and organizes outreach and fundraising activities for Tyrosinemia children.
